What’s it like running orchestra rehearsals through Facebook?

A 60-piece orchestra is rehearsing online while its members are in isolation due to coronavirus. Music director Leo Geyer conducts the Devon Philharmonic Orchestra via Facebook, to make sure they all keep their musical talents in tune.

Music Director Leo Geyer said:
"As soon as we were put into lock down I was determined to keep music alive in spite of a deadly virus. Virtual rehearsals are naturally quite different and require serious prep as well as improvisation! However, the challenges are well worth overcoming because we can make music, retain our community spirit and most importantly, have a good time.”

Leader Clare Smith said
"I think our orchestra (DPO) was particularly disappointed that our rehearsals had to cease in March because we had been working so hard on the programme for our annual spring concert in Exeter Cathedral, which was due to be performed on 25th April.
When Leo came up with the brilliant idea of virtual rehearsals it seemed a fabulous way of continuing our preparation together, albeit in a rather extraordinary way. Although entirely different to any other rehearsal I have ever attended, the sense of camaraderie and fun as we embark on another Thursday evening session together with Leo at the helm is absolutely brilliant.”

Leo and Clare featured in a BBC Spotlight story, you can see their film on the BBC website.
